Discover new memories on the mountain, in the water, or exploring colourful gardens and invigorating art. It's one of the few places where you can go snow boarding in the morning and surfing the same afternoon, followed by an evening relaxing in a restaurant with great food and wine.
Must do's:
- It’s been asked "Where in the world can you snow ski in the morning & sea surf in the afternoon?" The answer is in the Taranaki Region - so much to see & do!
- Take the Jurassic falls adventure flight landing at the base of the falls and check out the ancient fossils - fantastic!
- At Lake Rotokare, Eltham you can hear native birds calling as you walk this predator proof reserve. A beautiful spot. Open daily.
The best kept secrets:
- Ahu Ahu beach villas. Unique accommodation located by the sea and only a few minutes from Oakura township. Stunning views and only a short stroll to the beach
- Nowell’s Lake Walkway in Hawera is a pleasant short walk that leads you to a lake through farmland and native trees that have been planted by local schools.
- Follow the ruggeed coast between Ohawe and Waihi Beach. It can only be done around low tide, but there are amazing views of the southern coastline.
Great food & wine:
- For a great dining experience try II Chefs Steakhouse on High, Hawera. Fabulous food and giant steaks! Open Tuesday - Saturday.
- On your way around Surf Highway 45 make sure you stop at Sugar Juice Cafe in Opunake - their chicken pies and homemade salsa are great!
- Marracbo Cafe in Hawera has great coffee and a fantastic menu to match. Try the salads on the lunch menu...delicious!
Hot deals:
- Spend $150 with i-SITE New Plymouth and receive a 30% discount off quality Puke Ariki Books
